Raven Update II

Both vets (Kerstin and her partner Abigail) came out this morning to treat Raven. Miss Thing *cantered* away from me when I went to catch her, which I take as a good sign. Overall the vets were very pleased with how things look. Inflammation has gone down around the joint, and they were able to detect two pockets of fluid with the ultrasound. The fluid appears confined to the joint and is not affecting the tendon sheath -- I am rapidly learning more about hock joints, and this is good news. Both pockets of fluid were drained, flushed and infused with antibiotics again. Raven got another 350cc of Excenel (about $100 worth -- eek!) and 2g of bute. More bute tonight, more Excenel and bute tomorrow, and Kerstin will be back on Monday morning to see where things stand. I remain cautiously optimistic.

Still no sign of the culprit despite much searching. Abigail suggested that I get a metal detector, which is a really good idea. Raven now has a big edema under her chest, but I can't say whether it's from stress or trauma or maybe just her blanket binding around her when she's down. The good news is that Kerstin examined Tonka this morning and thought that I was crazy for worrying at all about strangles. Daun will be pleased to hear that we decided against further vaccination.

Oh, that IS good news all around! Poor Tonka, he looks forlorn there without his darling...

Hmmm, a metal detector is always a good thing. I could imagine Raven getting skewered by something, and taking off with it still in her, then it falling out goodness knows where! At least she is healing well, if on the expensive side.

Mammal bodies are amazing things. The more I learn about all of us on this planet, the odder I find everything! Who needs cryptozoology when regular animals are so strange and amazing?

PS, can you send some rain? We're on fire AGAIN! Everything that didn't burn last month is flaming up today... We're in the secondary evac zone, but I ain't leaving until either the parakeets keel over or the firefighters knock on my door! We're packed, but I just don't want to go... I'd rather stay and put out any embers that may fall!

YAY FOR RAVEN! Also, my word verification is "mulness" which is close enough to muleness - I think that describes all of our horses. Muley old things!

Very good sign, I would think, that she cantered away. Will continue to send good thoughts (and then some) until she's out of the woods.

hi - i found my way here from funder's blog. just want to send my best wishes for raven's speedy and complete recovery. puncture wounds are always a nightmare, but joint wounds are especially nerve wracking.

(my jumper once bucked and got his legs over the butt-bar in a trailer which broke and sliced a huge hole in the front of his hock, just missing the joint capsule - after 6 months of stall rest and aggressive therapy, he's got a nasty scar but is sound...)

i'm glad your vets are treating it aggressively and that she is responding so well. sending best wishes and positive thought-vibes your way :-)
